La Casa Moustache

La Casa Moustache on talo Guadalajaran keskustassa, jonka oveen on maalattu valtavat viikset.

Kiitos tyypit kaikesta! <3

Same in English

La Casa Moustache is a house in downtown of Guadalajara with a huge
moustache painted on its door. On the other side of the door you can find a big living room, 8 rooms, couple of kitchens and bathrooms, very cute patio and its avocado tree, all these in three floors plus the rooftop where you can have a barbeque.

The house have 7 colorful personalities as residents from different backgrounds and a dog and a cat. Everyone of the residents are more or less creative and artistic. They share, besides their home together, at least one common value which is open mindness/ tolerance toward others. Even though they might have different opinions, beliefs or values, they all fit under the same roof. As an outsider perception I think they have even more common values as being environmental-friendly, community and somekind of minimalism. When I asked if there is an ideology in the house I got a reply “yes, the philosophy is: enjoy your life!”

Story of La Casa Moustache began in 2011 when a French guy called Alex and his Mexican girlfriend Monica were looking for themselves a room to rent. “Monica found this place. First we were this one guy’s subtenants in the house. He was meant to do some renovation in the house but did nothing. When the landlord came to visit they were dissappointed of the situation and then at the end of the day we ended up to rent the house. In the beginning there was no proper floor in the house, no lights or bathroom and the rooms didn’t have doors. We were renovating the house peace by peace and then friends started to move in.”

There have been different kind of residents in the past years. Students from Mexico and Europe, travelers and hitchhikers passing by but then stayed for longer. Also quite random people, for example a girl from France who started to talk with Alex in the street. The idea back then was to offer an Airbnb-style accommodation for long-term residents but the house as a hostel was never on their mind.

Some of the residents left when covid started, few stayed. It was also a time when the turnover of residents decreased and brought closer to each others the ones who stayed as they spent more time at home
during the covid. In this moment there are 7 residents in the house, some of them lived there for years and some few months.

And how did the house get its name? “In the early years we had parties where we sold beer to collect money. At the first party we decided that everyone has to draw a moustache for themselves, women and men. I guess it started like that.”

Oh and how did I end up to stay in La Casa Moustache? One of the residents, Lili, happens to be an active member in the association which recieved me here as a volunteer and she had an opportunity to accommodate me to wait the visa.

(I'll publish the interview's of some of the residents later!)

This was an amazing opportunity to get to know the city and the awesome people of the house who I'm now proud to call my friends! Thanks guys for everything! <3
